David Horton, PhD, LMSW, LPC-A, LMFT-A
Dr. Horton is a Therapist we contract with for services in any of our offices. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Social Work, and then went on to earn his PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Texas Woman's University. During his time at TWU, he conducted therapy at the counseling center, eventually becoming the Acting Director in the Director's absence. One of the reasons that he pursued a master's degree in social work and ultimately a doctorate in family therapy was because he wanted to assist others in realizing their ability to live a fulfilling life.
Dr. Horton specializes in working with intellectual disabilities, developmental disorders, autistm spectrum disorder, parenting and families dealing with disabilities. As a person with a disability, he brings a unique perspective to his practice, deeply understanding the challenges and strengths that can arise from navigating the world with a disability.
Dr Horton lives with the effects of a mild form of cerebral palsy, resulting in slow speech and some motor skill issues. That means, that on occasion, there may be an impact on professional interactions, such as scheduling adjustments and the use of accommodations. There may be rare instances where he will need to reschedule appointments due to health-related reasons, but he will always give as much notice as possible. During sessions,,,, he may use assistive technology, such as a tape recorder, and has a transcriptionist (who has years of experience and adheres to the HIPAA confidentiality requirements), who helps with the final notes that go into your file. This person may be present during virtual therapy sessions. (If so, he will inform you of this).
Dr. Horton's priority is and always will be, your care. He would like to reassure you that he has taken the necessary steps to ensure that his disability does not interfere with his professional judgement or the quality of his clinical work.
